Women on Birth Control Pill may live longer
gemahrv0429
Women who took the birth control pill beginning in the late 1960s lived longer than those never on the pill, a new study says.
British researchers observed more replica watches than 46,000 women for nearly four decades from 1968. They compared the number of deaths in women on the pill to those who never took it.
In the study, women on the pill generally took it for almost four years. Experts concluded the pill cut women's risk of dying from bowel cancer by 38 percent and from any other diseases by about 12 percent.
The research was published Friday in the British medical journal, BMJ.
Slightly higher death rates were found among women under 30 on the pill, but that began to be reversed by age 50.
Doctors aren't sure exactly why the pill may lower death rates. It contains synthetic hormones to suppress ovulation, which may have some role in preventing certain diseases.
Previous studies have found the pill does not raise the risk of dying. It also may protect against ovarian and endometrial cancer, but slightly increase the chances of breast and cervical cancer. It may also be that women on the pill are somehow healthier than those that aren't.
Because the study only observed women on the pill compared with those who weren't, researchers weren't able to make any hypotheses about cause and effect.
"In the longer term, the health benefits of the contraceptive pill outweigh any risks," Richard Anderson, a gynecologist at the University of Edinburgh, said in a statement. Anderson was not connected to the BMJ study.
But he said the findings might not be projected to women using modern contraceptive pills, which may have a different risks than earlier products. The risks may IWC watches also be higher depending on when women start taking the pill and how long they are on it.
"Many women, especially those who used the first generation of oral contraceptives many years ago, are likely to be reassured by our results," Philip Hannaford of the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, the study's lead researcher, said in a statement.
Hannaford and colleagues said the pill's risks and benefits may vary worldwide, depending on how it is used and each patient's health risks.
10 Steps to Making Your College Career a Valuable Experience
gemahrv0426
When I went to college, I was right out of high school, overwhelmed by the freedom and very quickly baffled by the academic expectations. Today’s college students replica watches are often much more mature, more experienced – and in many cases, returning to school to improve a life. More often than not, college students are working as well.
College careerWhether you’re eighteen and new to it all or you’re back in the classroom to try and make academics work for you again, college can be rough water if you’re intimidated and/or pushing yourself with family/job/education. Here are some suggestions to maximize the value of your time spent in the academic fold:
1.Don’t let a pile of overpriced books and a quicker learning pace make you think you’re in over your head. It’s just a new environment.
2.No matter what the professors think, classes probably shouldn’t be optional. Look at it this way – until you’re sure you don’t need it, take advantage of all the help you can get.
3.Take notes you can read. If what you’re hearing is too much to process on any given day, find a classmate to bounce your questions off of. But don’t think you have to learn to be a court reporter overnight.
4.This might be counterintuitive or difficult as hell – but asking a few questions of the lecturer doesn’t hurt either. Give yourself a chance to feel like you have an investment in all that academic achievement as well – have a good conversation with someone who is opening up new intellectual doors for you can be an enormous boost. There’s more payback to those classes than credits and a grade.
5. All that reading isn’t insurmountable a chapter at a time. If you break it into manageable bites, you can get through it with a lot less indigestion – and learn more from it in the process. Besides, ignoring it will drive you crazy.
6. You have probably heard this during your previous fifteen years in school – but plan your studying. That’s not to blow a hole in your day, it’s so you won’t blow a hole in your semester. If you do it and stick with it, life gets easier.
7. Weekends may not always be for playing anymore. If you’re working and going to school, for sure they won’t be. Once again, the idea is to make school manageable, which makes it tolerable, which eventually may make it…really intriguing. You can build an afternoon on your bike or a few hours in front of a football game into any schedule if you hit the books when you have it pencilled in. Otherwise you’ll be trying to read a textbook during the beer commercials and not enjoying the game nor learning much either.
8. Always do a draft. As good as you are at slamming a paper together, do yourself the favor of time for a rough draft. Bang it out like it’s a first and final, but leave time to review it anyway. You’ll be amazed at how little adjustments can make a major improvement and once again, what was once anxiety and pressure becomes a manageable chore that may just become an achievement.
9. Now about those exams – they’re going to weigh on you no matter how well you’ve covered the material. The key to taking an exam with confidence is to do as thorough a review as you can and see at least seventy five percent of the material for at least the second time. There’s a difference between holing up for a final review and cramming.
10. Put your best into it and then consider college the art of the possible. If you’re going through the learning process with newly tested initiative and applying standards you’ve never held IWC watches yourself to before, than you can call that a victory. If you get a little better at it the first few weeks or the first few semesters, there will come a day when you know you’re doing an efficient job. That’s all you can ask of yourself.
Don’t compare your insides to someone else’s outsides. It’s your college career, your major, your degree. Resumes aside, the value of an education is an intensely personal thing, so don’t demean it by thinking you should be some other kind of student. Every school experience opens up new horizons, but you won’t see them if you’ve got misguided expectations blocking your view.
The office coffee is more important than it seems
gemahrv0422
Nathan Hartland was at Caribou Coffee in downtown Baltimore recently, picking up a cappuccino on his lunch hour. His 3-year-old son had awoken in the middle of the previous night, leaving a replica watches sleep-deprived Hartland in need of a serious jolt of caffeine.
“I’m here to make sure I’m awake through the afternoon,” said Hartland, a lawyer at Miles & Stockbridge. He could have had a cup of free coffee at the office, but opted not to.
“I don’t enjoy it — and it also gives me a headache,” said Hartland, who prefers cappuccino because it doesn’t leave his head throbbing like regular or decaf coffee.
Clearly, people have strong preferences when it comes to their java, which can complicate things for employers who offer coffee in the workplace.
We usually don’t think much about that cup of Joe — other than whether to opt for skim milk or cream; sugar or Equal. But workplace experts say that depending on how it is handled, coffee can either be a perk that fuels employee morale or an annoyance that steams up workers to the point where they feel alienated and disgruntled.
Think of the person who consistently gets stuck having to brew a fresh pot because a sneaky co-worker always makes off with the last cupful. Or the decaf drinker who feels left out in an office that offers only regular coffee.
“Variety is very important,” said Deborah Diehl, a partner at law firm Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, which offers several different coffees. “There are certain attorneys who, if the French roast is out, are not going to have a good day.”
Some workers are so dedicated to their favorite brand of coffee, they’d rather dig into their pocket to buy their own coffee than settle for what’s available at the office for free.
On a recent weekday, Cory Stokesberry was heading back to the downtown construction company where he works as a project manager, a Starbucks coffee in hand.
Stokesberry moved to Baltimore from Seattle — the home of Starbucks — five months ago. Coming from the Emerald City, a place where the aroma of coffee pervades the air and there are downtown streets with a coffee shop on every corner, Stokesberry was overjoyed when he finally found a Starbucks in downtown Baltimore.
“It’s not even comparable,” he said of the comparison between Starbucks and his office’s coffee.
Joyce Russell, an industrial and organizational psychologist who consults for private companies and government agencies, said what seems like a trivial matter — such as who cleans the office coffee pot — can loom large these days because workers at many companies may already be feeling frazzled from being overworked.
“If there’s already a collaborative environment, this won’t be much of a stresser,” said Russell, who teaches courses in leadership and organizational behavior at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. “But if people are already feeling stressed, this won’t help.”
Workers tend to view how a company handles the little perks as a symbol of how much they care about their employees, said Filiz Tabak, a professor of management and leadership at Towson University’s College of Business and Economics.
If handled correctly, free coffee and other small IWC watches benefits can turn into an advantage because it makes workers feel better about their company, reducing employee turnover and making it easier to recruit new workers.
“If I’m in a company where my well-being counts, I’m going to talk about it to my friends and their friends,” Tabak said.
So employers should think twice before deciding arbitrarily to save money by switching to a less expensive brand of coffee or eliminating it altogether, said Russell, the organizational psychologist. If a change needs to be made, workers should be included in the decision-making process, she said.
That’s what Whiteford, Taylor & Preston did when it decided to switch coffee vendors several years ago.
The firm set up an array of coffees from different suppliers in a conference room and let workers have their say about which they liked best. That made workers feel appreciated, said Tracy Canady, a collections specialist who favors French vanilla.
To handle the decaf versus regular conundrum, when the firm redid its downtown Baltimore offices about three years ago, it went from communal coffee pots, one for decaf and one for regular, to single-serve Flavia coffee machines on its employee floors.
Instead of using a coffee pot, the Flavia machines use single-serve coffee packets that are inserted into the machine to make individual cups of coffee.
That means workers get the variety they want without having a coffee pot to clean.
On a recent Wednesday, the offerings included hot chocolate and seven types of coffee ranging from cappuccino latte swirl to house blend decaf.
Coffee is an important part of the social fabric, in the office and elsewhere.
“If you’re talking to clients, it’s the first thing you offer them,” said Alexander Koff, who heads Whiteford, Taylor & Preston’s global practice.
Corby Kummer, a senior editor at the Atlantic Monthly and the author of book “The Joy of Coffee,” is generally no fan of office coffee, however. It tends to be too weak, or too bitter, because it has been left on the burner too long, he said.
“So often you get something that reminds you of what Abraham Lincoln told a waiter,” Kummer said. “ ‘If this is coffee, bring me tea, and if this is tea, bring me coffee.’ ”
Mother & Child
gemahrv0421
It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town in Ohio where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly anticipated the great day of gifts give
A tree covered with tinsel and gaudy paper chains replica watches graced one corner. In another rested a manger scene produced from cardboard and poster paints by chubby, and sometimes grubby, hands. Someone had brought a doll and placed it on the straw in the cardboard box that served as the manger. It didn't matter that you could pull a string and hear the blue-eyed, golden-haired dolly say, "My name is Susie." "But Jesus was a boy baby!" one of the boys proclaimed. Nonetheless, Susie stayed
Each day the children produced some new wonder -- strings of popcorn, hand-made trinkets, and German bells made from wallpaper samples, which we hung from the ceiling. Through it all she remained aloof, watching from afar, seemingly miles away. I wondered what would happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now so suddenly withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would appeal to her. But nothing did. We made cards and gifts for mothers and dads, for sisters and brothers, for grandparents, and for each other. At home the students made the popular fried marbles and vied with one another to bring in the prettiest ones. " You put them in a hot frying pan, Teacher. And you let them get real hot, and then you watch what happens inside. But you don't fry them too long or they break."So, as my gift to them, I made each of my students a little pouch for carrying their fried marbles. And I knew they had each made something for me: bookmarks carefully cut, colored, and sometimes pasted together; cards and special drawings; liquid embroidery doilies, hand-fringed, of course
The day of gift-giving finally came. We oohed and aahed over our handiwork as the presents were exchanged. Through it all, she sat quietly watching. I had made a special pouch for her, red and green with white lace. I wanted very much to see her smile. She opened the package so slowly and carefully. I waited but she turned away. I had not penetrated the wall of isolation she had built around herself.
After school the children left in little groups, chattering about the great day yet to come when long-hoped-for two-wheelers and bright sleds would appear beside their trees at home. She lingered, watching them bundle up and go out the door. I sat down in a child-sized chair to catch my breath, hardly aware of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, unwrapped and slightly soiled, as though it had been held many times by unwashed, childish hands. She said nothing. "For me?" I asked with a weak smile. She said not a word, but IWC watches nodded her head. I took the box and gingerly opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble hung from a golden chain. Then I looked into that elderly eight-year-old face and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew -- she had made it for her mother, a mother she would never see again, a mother who would never hold her or brush her hair or share a funny story, a mother who would never again hear her childish joys or sorrows. A mother who had taken her own life just three weeks before.
I held out the chain. She took it in both her hands, reached forward, and secured the simple clasp at the back of my neck. She stepped back then as if to see that all was well. I looked down at the shiny piece of glass and the tarnished golden chain, then back at the giver. I meant it when I whispered," Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. She would have loved it."Neither of us could stop the tears. She stumbled into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest gift of all: herself.

A lot of people think it isn't possible for them to help others see their dreams come true. It's easier than many think. Bringing happiness into someone's life by helping them realize replica watches their dreams is one of the most beautiful things anyone can do for another person. When one has enough compassion in one's heart, it is possible for one to help another realize these dreams- no matter how big.
The 26-year-old mother stared down at her son who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams- now that was no longer possible. The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true.
She took her son's hand and asked, Bopsy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be when you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish about what you would do with your life?
Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.
Mom smiled back and said, Let's see if we can make your wish come true. Later that day she went where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.
Fireman Bob said, Look, we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards! And, if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform made for him, with a real fire hat — not a toy one — with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast.
Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Bopsy, dressed him in his fire uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck. Bopsy got to sit up on the back of the truck and help steer it back to the fire station. He was in heaven.
There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Bopsy got to go out on all three calls. He rode in the different fire engines, the paramedics' van and even the fire chief's car. He was also videotaped for the local news program.
Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Bopsy that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.
One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the Hospice concept that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital. Then she remembered the day Bopsy had spent as a fireman, so she called the fire chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Bopsy as he made his transition. The chief replied, We can do better than that. We'll be there in five minutes. Will you please do me a favor? When you hear the sirens screaming and see the lights flashing, will IWC watches you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire? It's just the fire department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will you open the window to his room? Thanks.
About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital, extended its ladder up to Biopsy's third floor open window and 14 firemen and two firewomen climbed up the ladder into Biopsy's room. With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they loved him.
With his dying breath, Bopsy looked up at the fire chief and said, Chief, am I really a fireman now?
Bopsy, you are, the chief said.
With those words, Bopsy smiled and closed his eyes for the last time.
Jane Eyre
gemahrv0417
Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body replica watches but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:
We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past. We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the God’s feet. Though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality, her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence leave us so much to think.
When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.
Actually, she wasn’t pretty, and of course, the ordinary appearance didn’t make others feel good of her, even her own aunt felt disgusted with it. And some others even thought that she was easy to look down on and to tease, so when Miss Ingram met Jane Eyre, she seemed quite contemptuous, for that she was obviously much more prettier than ‘the plain and ugly governess’. But as the little governess had said: ‘Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!’ This is the idea of equality in Jane Eyre’s mind. God hadn’t given her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. Her idea of equality and self-respect impress us so much and let us feel the power inside her body.
In my mind, though a person’s beauty on the face can make IWC watches others once feel that one is attractive and charming, if his or her mind isn’t the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last forever. For a long time, only a person’s great virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as an everlasting beauty, just as Kahill Gibran said that ‘Beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted’ so we can’t distinguish whether a person is of nobleness or humbleness from appearance, but as there are great differences in our souls.
Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty.
If I were a Boy Again
gemahrv0416
If I were a boy again, I would practice perseverance more often, and never give up a thing because it was or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. Perseverance can replica watches sometimes equal genius in its results. “There are only two creatures,” syas a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids—the eagle and the snail.” If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we begain early enough. I often hear grown up people say “ I could not fix my attention on the sermon or book, although I wished to do so” , and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth. If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
I were a boy again, I would cultivate courage. “Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless as cowardice,” syas a wise author. We too often borrow trouble, and anticipate that may never appear.” The fear of ill exceeds the ill we fear.” Dangers will arise in any career, but presence of mind will often conquer the worst of them. Be prepared for any fate, and there is no harm to be freared. If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, I smiles back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return. Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. “ who shuts love out ,in turn shall be shut out from love.” If I were a boy again, I would school myself to say no more often. I might write pages on the importance of learning very early in life to gain that point where a young boy can stand erect, and decline doing an unworthy act because it is unworthy. If I were a boy again, I would demand of myself more courtesy towards my IWC watches companions and friends, and indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roads of life are like the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow more endurable. Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, I would , if I were a boy again, I would still try harder to make others happy.
New Data: Teen Pregnancy on the Rise, Abortions Too
gemahrv0318
Pregnancy rates among U.S. teenagers, which had been dropping since 1990, took an upturn in 2006, according to newly released data. The figures, obtained from government sources and abortion providers by the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive-health think tank, echo previous Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that births among teens had risen. But the new Guttmacher report rounds out the picture: in 2006, there were 71.5 pregnancies for every 1,000 women under the age of 20. That's 3% more than in 2005. The increase was concentrated among 18- and 19-year-olds — pregnancies among those 17 or younger rose only marginally — and occurred in a year when the number of abortions among teens rose 1%. (Read "Teen Pregnancy: An Epidemic in Foster Care.")
These upticks will no doubt be scrutinized by the schools, churches and governments that had been achieving some success in lowering the teen pregnancy rate. After rising steadily with the sexual revolution of the '70s and '80s, the rate dropped sharply in the '90s — and then more slowly from 2000 until 2005 — before turning upward. But even in 2006, the most recent year for which figures are available, the rate was 39% lower than 1990's peak of 117 pregnancies for every 1,000 teen girls. (See pictures of a diverse group of American teens.)
While the recent increase has been more marked in minority women, the rate of pregnancy over the long term has dropped more rapidly among black teens. In 2005, both black and non-white Hispanic teens had a pregnancy rate of just over 12%, down from 22% and 16%, respectively. (White teens have a pregnancy rate of about 4.4%, down from 8.7%.)
When it comes to abortion, the trend line has been heading downward among whites and Hispanic teens. In 1990, 43.9% of pregnant white teens terminated their pregnancies, according to the Guttmacher report. In 2006, 29.3% did. Among Hispanics, the rate dropped from 28.1% to 22.9% in the same period. But among black teens, the rate has not moved much in 15 years — holding steady at about 41%. (Read "How to Bring an End to the War Over Sex Ed.")
One of the innovations of the Guttmacher report is a state-by-state breakdown of pregnancy figures over the 17 years between 1988 and 2005. California, Hawaii and New Hampshire have been most successful in driving down their teen pregnancy rates, by 54%, 49% and 47%, respectively. But even at the other end of the scale, Arkansas, Iowa, North Dakota and Wyoming have all managed to lower their teen pregnancy rates by 25%.
For officials looking for insights into which sex-education models to copy, however, figuring out why some states have been more successful than others at reducing teen pregnancy will not be easy, especially when it comes to cases for and against the now largely discontinued abstinence-until-marriage education. According to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S., New Hampshire, which has had a big drop in its teen pregnancy Replica Watches rates since 1988, received almost no federal abstinence-education funding in 2006. But neither did Wyoming, a state that has not lowered its teen pregnancy rates much. Texas, Florida and New York, the states that received the most federal abstinence funding, fell somewhere in the middle in terms of improvement. (Read "Parents' Sex Talk with Kids: Too Little, Too Late.")
For its part, the Guttmacher Institute is opposed to abstinence-only education. "A strong body of research shows that these programs do not work," says Heather Boonstra, a senior public policy associate at the New York City–based organization. "Fortunately, the heyday of this failed experiment has come to an end with the enactment of a new teen pregnancy prevention initiative that ensures that programs will be age-appropriate, medically accurate and, most importantly, based on research demonstrating their effectiveness." Among teens who were not heeding the abstinence advice and were sexually active, about 15% became pregnant, down from a peak of 22% in 1990.
It's too soon to tell if the increase in 2006 is the beginning of a trend or a blip, but any rise in pregnancy rates among those younger than 20 is a cause for concern — because the statistics surrounding teen mothers are so grim. Two-thirds of single moms are poor. Fewer than half of them finish high school. And only a tiny fraction (2%) of girls who are mothers before their 18th birthday will finish college before their 30th.
